THERAPIES

Couples Therapy

6 years. That’s the statistical duration of time that would have lapsed before most couples in need will seek therapy. And by the time things become truly intractable, the negativity between the partners would have become gravitationally overwhelming.

Which is why it is important to identify teething issues that don’t go away and seek intervention at an early stage. Together with your significant other.

Often, the issues that arise are manifestations of the conflicts between two persons with differences in perspective, outlook or experience. The first step in the reconciliation process is to accept that no one person is a singularity unto him or herself; we are all made up of different “selves” forged from the fires of experience: our experiences growing up, our family history, our frendships, achievements and setbacks and more. Being in a relationship with a significant other means a relationship not just with the “self” that your partner presents to you under perfect conditions, but also the full range of their different “selves”.

What is the Gottman Method?

The Gottman Method Couples Therapy identifies “nine principles” that the couple must work through together in order to nourish and maintain their association, and the “four horsemen” responsible for the destruction in a relationship and which are found much less frequently in healthy relationships.

What happens during a Gottman Relationship Checkup?

During the assessment phase, our couple therapist will first administer a Gottman Relationship Checkup.

It is an online assessment that automatically scores a couple’s strengths and challenges, and provides specific therapeutic recommendations for intervention.

The questionnaire is completely confidential, fully HIPAA compliant, and your therapist will be the only person to see your responses.

Drs. John and Julie Gottman created this research-based assessment in collaboration with The Gottman Institute. It helps couples and their therapist to formulate a personalised management plan.

Dr. John Gottman is a clinical psychologist who is known for his work on marial stability and divorce prediction. He has completed more than 50 years of research on couple relationships. The Gottman Relationship Checkup was developed from the evidence-based information based on this scientific research.

Julie Gottman is a highly respected clinical psychologist and co-founder of the Gottman Institute.

How the Gottman Relationship Checkup works:

1. Accept your invitation
Your therapist will send each partner a separate email inviting you to join the Gottman Relationship Checkup.

2. Create a private profile
Once the email invitation has been accepted to join the Gottman Relationship Checkup, each partner will create an individual profile.

3. Complete the questionnaire
Each partner will complete their own questionnaire at their convenience. You may stop and start at any time. Neither partner will be able to access the other’s information at any point in the process. In order to preserve the integrity and accuracy of the tool, the partners are encouraged not to share their responses with each other or log in to their partner’s account. The actual time it takes to complete each assessment varies, but it will take, on average, about two hours.

4. Get your results
When both partners have both completed their individual questionnaires, the therapist will be notified and will be able to securely log in to review the scores and the analysis of the couple’s relationship. The therapist will discuss the results with the couple and suggest a management plan for improving and strengthening the couple relationship.
